In coming final two posts I dedicate my wholehearted and sincere thanks to Maa Vaishno Devi because of whose blessings I was able t0 come here. It was only and only the decision of Great Goddess that I was able to perform my Amarnath Yatra and finally called by her. I am greatly obliged and feel lucky and fortunate one to be blessed by her. Along with Mata , I would also thank the authorities for managing this huge heavily visited shrine with such a thoughtful and  organised manner that if visited once would develop penchant of visiting again and again.
Along with my travelogue I would also like to help the devotees by giving them each and every information known by me and share it on this common platform so that every body can benefited.
At Katra
Here I come to my final destination of this ” Mighty Journey to Almighty ” i.e. Vaishno Devi , which is one of the biggest Shakti peeths in Hindu Mythology. Along with Kamakhya Devi it is the most important destination in Shakta tradition. Before going towards the journey I will start to narrate about hotel and arrangements in Vaishno Devi.  In  katra there are countless Hotels at every corner of the town. In fact I feel each and every building you see would come out to be a Hotel. But I stayed at Niharika Guest house which is organised and maintained by Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. I arrived at around 4.30 PM at Katra in the main Chowk and in the mean time I found this wonderful complex which has plethora of facilities.  I was once again very fortunate because only one room was available and it was me who got it, because this Hotel is always full with advance online bookings.
Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Accomodation (Niharika Complex)

Pahalgam to Katra
Finally it was sad time as we are about to leave Pahalgam. This is one of the most attached destinations to my heart and I was feeling very dejected at this moment. We woke up in the morning early. We had already booked Tavera before, for Rs. 3800 till Katra . We left Pahalgam at 6.00 AM and our target was to reach Katra and relax a bit. Next day we had to climb Vaishno Devi.

Final moments in Pahalgam
In Anantnag we stopped for tea which is around 45 kms from Pahalgam. We saw beautiful shop selling Kashmir handicrafts.Kashmiri handicrafts vary from synthetic and woolen shawls, sarees, dresses, Paper Mash artifacts, art jewelry and wood carvings. Shawls vary from Rs. 450/- for the synthetic one to Rs.9000/- for pure Pashmina Wool Shawl. Sarees started from Rs. 400/-. Pashmina shawls are very soft, light and have a self contained design, though they look ordinary. Papier Machie items have a wide range from sindhoor box, key chains, Candle stand to Jewel Box. Wood Craft has Shikhara Boats, Hookahs, Ash Trays and Cigarette Cases. Art jewelry has a wide range too.
Kashmir Willow tree is found all along the Jammu Srinagar Highway and Cricket Bat industries are found all along the way.Cricket bats range from Rs.250-/ to Rs.2500/- which are targeted at low and middle income youngsters. They ship these bats all over India.

PAHALGAM : Aru Valley, Deer Park & Mamaleshwar Temple

TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR PAHALGAM 2012

  1. PAHALGAM : Betaab Valley
  2. PAHALGAM : Aru Valley, Deer Park and Mamaleshwar Temple
  3. PAHALGAM : Specialties

Aru valley :- One of the most beautiful and pleasant habitats I have ever seen. Not to be missed when one is in Pahalgam.
Towards Aru Valley
After having satiation and fun in Betaab valley we headed towards our next destination Aru Valley. Here today on 1st August we were having rest and relaxation along with comfortable sight seeing  of Pahalgam. Still one wish was pending that I wanted to bath in Himalayan rivers having crystal clear cold waters. After reading many posts here this was one of the biggest desire I was longing for . In Betaab valley after seeing the lush green water of East Lidder I was heavily tempted to jump inside the river . But I couldn’t bath in East Lidder because of two reasons . One was we didn’t bring towel and clothes and secondly due to waste deposits in Chandanwadi because of Amarnath yatra the clean, clear and green river was contaminated. But the desire was not vanished here because I had already a plan to bath in Aru valley in Lidder river ( Here I would like to inform that the river coming out of Sheshnag Lake is actually East Lidder and and river coming out of glaciers of Sonmarg through Aru valley is called Lidder river )/ Lidder and East Lidder both meet at Pahalgam and hence forth it is called only Lidder which eventually meets Jhelum river at Anantnag.
And also for going to Aru valley we have to come back to Pahalgam and go again at  a different route . So we reached our hotel first took clothes and towel for bathing and then proceeded towards Aru Valley.
Here on the way between Aru Valley and Pahalgam in right, A deer park is located which I will cover while coming back.

  3. AMARNATH YATRA : Pahalgam - Chandanwadi
  4. AMARNATH YATRA : Pissutop - Nagakoti
  5. AMARNATH YATRA : Sheshnag - Mahagunas (Ganesh) Top
  6. AMARNATH YATRA : Poshpatri - Panchtarni
  7. AMARNATH YATRA : Panchtarni - Sangam
  8. AMARNATH YATRA : Amarnath Cave and Ice Shivalinga
  9. AMARNATN YATRA : Return Trek & Charri Mubarak

As I have explained each and every details of the destinations covered, I would just add the pictures here with small one liners and captions. In between there was one more intimidating incident which I have narrated and apart from that darshan of one of the most auspicious thing used by Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati.
Return Trek towards Pahalgam
We started to return at around 10.00 – 10.15  am . Any how we had to reach Pahalgam today in the evening. While yesterday  we covered 26 kms ( Chandanwadi to Panchtarni) to of the trekking journey and today we had to cover 38 kms of the journey. In which 6 kms from Panchtarni to Amarnath Cave ( 6 kms was already covered). So now 32 kms were remaining and we had around 8 hours to return if we wanted to reach today. So we needed to rush , but the positive most of the trek was climbing downwards an descend.Only climb was between Panchtarni to Mahagunas Top and that it was not too steep. So We started the return journey all on the horses. Also I remembered the dangerous incident with Aarya, So I was not so keen to take Aarya on that old horse. But nobody except Aarya could have sat on the horse. So we proceeded on that horse only. But as soon as Aarya sat on the horse and we started  again problems of imbalancing started . This time I was angry and I didn’t want Aarya to go on that old horse. So I told that horseman that this is not going to work and so he carried Aarya on his shoulders as seen in the picture. Now this made me relax a bit as we were passing through the most dangerous part of the yatra and Aarya was not on that horse.

Aarya again tilting on the right due to imbalance on Return Trek (Amarnath Cave – Sangam)

In between we saw lot of Palanquins ( Dolis) coming from Panchtarni. I aksed horseman what is cost of a palanquin from Pahalgam and back. He told me the price was R. 15000 for the round trip from Pahalgam. COOL. 64 kms on shoulders of 4 people and rs. 15000.

In Betaab Valley pictures become more beautiful when you have someone in it. The expressions on face shows the pleasant and blissful mood in Betaab Valley. The entire experience can be termed as elated, blissful and overjoying.
AND
Here majority of the pictures are taken by our Guide  Mushtaq. Hence you will see many pictures with my family in it.

1st August 2012
Early Morning and Something about Pahalgam
Now after the Amarnath Yatra all of us were tired and exhausted. But I cannot sleep more after clock ticks more than 7.00 AM and now ghumakkari (travelling) has infused completely in my blood. So that day also I woke up at 6.30 AM and started to freshen up. Sonali , my father in law and Aarya chose to sleep and relax. But as usual I was in no mood to relax. I had a quick bath with hot water provided by Ishwaq, our Hotel owner and started off towards the main baazaar in Pahalgam. First of all I like to say that Pahalgam itself is divided into two parts . One is Pahalgam village . It is towards Chandanwadi and there everything is reasonable in budget. This is where I was staying. From Pahalgam village around one, one and half kms you will find Main bazaar ( market ) towards Anantnag where there are majority of all big Hotels , Restaurants and shopping items . This all you will get in Pahalgam village also but all at half the price. So people who want to stay will tight prices I would advice them to stay at Pahalgam Village. From Pahalgam Village to main bazaar the distance is around one km and sharing cars like Tavera , Sumo’s run between these Pahalgam main bazaar, village and Chandanwadi etc.
Now coming back to my ghumakkari , I wanted to go for Pahalgam sight seeing if my family wakes up before 12.00 noon. The main sight seeing places in Pahalgam are
  1. Chandanwadi
  2. Betaab valley
  3. Aru valley
  4. Baisaran, Pahalgam
  5. Gauri Shankar Temple
  6. Pandava Mamaleshwar Temple
  7. Pahalgam Main Bazaar
  8. Gardens of Pahalgam

PAHALGAM SPECIALTIES : FLOWERS, DRY FRUITS & HOTELS

TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR PAHALGAM 2012

  1. PAHALGAM : Betaab Valley
  2. PAHALGAM : Aru Valley, Deer Park and Mamaleshwar Temple
  3. PAHALGAM : Specialties

Before going through my journey,I had mentioned in my previous post I told you that I will show some specialties of Kashmir. As there are many distinguished and unique characteristics and things found in Kashmir I will try to show only some of them.

Flowers of Kashmir

The next important variety of Kashmir is its Valley of flowers. Frankly I don't  know how to express the beauty of the flowers. I was just enchanted by focusing at each one . These all flowers are found anywhere and every where in Kashmir in between hills, on the road side, near the streams and  rivers, in gardens, in Hotel lawns etc. Whenever I saw them anytime anywhere my job was to see them and click. The main characteristic of each of them is its bright color and different shades and color combination between them. Each one has its own beauty and charisma. When one looks at one of them, he or she  feels that the one he/she is staring at is the best one and better than the previous one.  The variety is such that you cannot remember the names of them. The best thing in Kashmir is that you don't get feeling to pluck them even if you could do so. They are there and you can just watch them for hours when you are in between them. Apart from their beauty you can also watch romance and relationship between the insects and them. Specially bees, while seeing them popping around for nectar , I felt angelic.
I was so  much allured and enticed with them that I am trying to develop a new hobby which is flowering and knowing more about them.
I also wrote some lines which I felt after observing them. Now please gaze at their spellbinding pictures. Thanks to my SONY - W 630 . It has very good option for clicking pictures of flowers.

These beauty of these flowers is so  alluring and delightful that after watching them , It can bring up smile on the dull patient's face, for sure.

Final Destination, Amarnath Cave :- With all my might and vocabulary in my mind I have tried my level best to narrate and show you what I have seen and sensed. But what  I have described and shown here is not even a fraction of what I felt there. To have a real feel one has to be called by Lord Amarnath. Jay Bhole.

Sangam to Amarnath Cave

Soon after crossing Sangam 7.30 AM, I tried to let aside the thoughts of the dangerous incident and was just watching anxiously the path and the Valley. Huge uproar was coming from Baltal route , Har Har Mahadeo and Jay Bhole and similarly Pahalgam pilgrims were replying with the same intensity. It was appearing as if some competition is going on, who is louder ? But all was in good spirits of ultimate devotion and love for the Lord.

Yes after around 5 minutes crossing Sangam Top on the valley where cave was situated, we got the darshan of that Secret Holy Cave. Still around 2.5 kms were remaining and through bright sunlight and fog I could make out where the cave was .The sight of the cave was so mesmerizing and enthralling that I couldn't take eyes of it. The divine and incorporeal rays and feeling coming from the cave had magnetized my mind and soul completely. I was in no mood of  seeing anything else apart from that cave. I shouted Sonali " सोनाली! पापा ! वह देखो, वही है गुफा, वहा सीधे सीधे, उस पहाड़ के अंत में.वहा तेंट्स के ऊपर , क्या दिख रही है? " ( Sonali, Papa! See there , there is the cave , there look straight, at the end of that mountain, above the tents, can you see it ). They replied Yes.

Automatically from inside all the other thoughts vanished and heart started to pump fast. Only thing in the mind was Lord Shiva. After planning for so long this is it . We are coming , still 2 kms to go.
Amarnath Cave at a distance of 2 kms seen but hazy atmosphere.

The most dreadful as well as the happiest day in my life was 31st July 2012. I cried due to fear and shock. And tears rolled due to ultimate happiness and eternal bliss felt. To believe it read my next two posts and feel with me.

31st July 2012, Tuesday
Morning in Panchtarni
At 5.00 AM in the morning we woke up. We wanted to go fast , have darshan and reach Pahalgam as soon as possible. So today everybody realized that being late is not a good idea. We freshened up ourselves within no time and were ready for take off from Panchtarni. Here in Panchtarni in the morning if you want hot water to bath the charges are rs. 5o per bucket and hot water bottle for rs. 20  for brushing and washing face. Now I and Sonali again had fast as it was Tuesday but today I thought its really wise not to do fast today as I am in charge and responsible for my family’s safety and in this conditions I don’t want to risk because sometimes in fasting period I do get some tiredness and faintness. So I went to a Bhandara and  had some breakfast and tea. And then we proceeded for one of my most dreadful moments of my life.
Again some conversations with horsemen
Now the Aarya’s horsemen was in grievance because all other people were getting Rs. 2000 / tour and he was getting Rs. 1000 / tour . And at night I didn’t gave them Rs.600 for dinner also. So all of them were unsatisfied. Even I felt that something was not balanced as he was also walking with us for past 26 kms. And this is no joke and so I told him ” चलो अब आपको मैं १५०० रू देता हूँ , लेकिन इसके बाद मैं एक भी रू नहीं दूंगा “. (come on I will give rs. 15oo , but hence forth i won’t give you a single penny). He was satisfied and our journey started. Now I did favour to this guy and  see what happens now. The temperature was chilling below 5 degree C. Our whole group of four was fully covered with winter clothing.

My Cutie Aarya on her Chhotu totally covered with warm clothes
Panchtarni to Sangam top
The next destination is Sangam at height of 13500 feet where routes via  Pahalgam and Baltal unite to go towards the cave.
The route of Panctarni to Sangam  is the most dangerous, toughest highest and deadliest . Many people die here due to accidents. We started here on a good note that we are going to have a darshan of Baba Amarnath today by shouting “Jay Bhole”  all the way.   Now the real horrifying way starts and a huge incident of my life is going to happen. Between this mountains and in the valley shown below , Helicopters from Baltal arrive and go towards Panchtarni .

The river below splits into five at Panchtarni . Heading towards Sangam top now.

Don’t think those to be stones in the middle of river. Those three are pieces of ice.
Here again there was some imbalance in Aarya’s horse and due to which we had to wait and adjust. Sonali and my father in law moved forward.

Again as shown the people before Sonali are walking on ice.
Some Bad Omens seen while climbing towards Sangam Top
Now I was seeing and smelling something very fishy here . I noticed that Aarya’s horse Chhotu ( 18 year old) had a habit of walking on edge of the path towards valley rather than walking in the path towards the mountain. And the Aarya’s horseman was even walking beyond the edge . I don’t know how but he also was walking on the edge sometimes in the slanting surfaces of the mountain. I think it  might have become habit of Chhotu of walking on the edge continuously working in these mountains for eighteen years. These horses after the yatra also are used by tourists in Pahalgam. Here the valley was extremely high and dangerous. Aarya was tightly tied to the horse so that she does not fall down. This tying with a cloth was done from Chandanwadi itself otherwise it is possible for kid to sit on the horse for that many hours. Also Sonali and my father in law had gone too forward  that I couldn’t visualise them. But at that moment I was very terrified and scared , but again I didn’t want to disturb the concentration of the horseman and the horse as they may be experienced to deal with these sort of situations. So after being afraid also I was keeping quiet. We were climbing higher and higher at point where the helicopters were also flying below us . And this horse is still walking on the edge. I told him twice to keep his horse towards the mountain but all in vain.

Towards Sangam the dreadful climb starts.

The height of the valley is such that even Helicopters fly below us.
Just Imagine the height
A point comes where even Helicopters look like ants and road just mere one to two feet wide and deep valley of around 1500 feet on one side. HORRIFYING! and still this horse is walking on the edge. If one falls from here in the valley not only bones but even body might break or say tear into pieces. My heart starts beating Dhak Dhak Dhak Dhak.

Can you see the Helicopter in circle  and People in the rectangular box. One inch here and there you are gone .DEADLY VALLEY.
The most Dreadful and Horrifying seconds of my life
Now around only 5oo meters might be remaining to reach Sangam Top and road was deadly with deep Valley besides and path was only two feet thick. And I found some BSF and CRPF jawans coming from front. As soon as they saw my daughter Aarya they started to come near her from frontside to play and cuddle her. One of them came in front of the horse with a camera to click Aarya , the other one came to hold her and one started calling loudly ” अरे बेटा कहा जा रहे हो , बाबाजी के पास , वाह वाह “(where are you going , towards Lord, Very good ) .Seeing these many activities in front of him the Aarya’s horse Chhotu , suddenly went beserk and ran towards the jawans. My heart started beating to full extent. Oh what is this happening. In this his two hind legs slipped in the valley with Aarya on her. The horseman also went half inside the valley near the horse’s mouth and with full his might was pushing the horse towards mountain. One of Jawaans immediately caught Aarya , but Aarya was tied up to the horse tightly and so he couldn’t remove her from the saddle. Third soldier caught his tail to stop him falling down. All of them failed . The horse tries to come out of the valley still trying with his hind legs  to come out in front with Aarya on her.In this helter skelter situation somewhere his two rear legs were slipping in the valley. I was seeing this whole incident of my daughter just about to go inside this deep valley and I couldn’t do anything. Can anyone try to feel what I might be going through. I was one of the most incompetent person in the whole world at that very moment. The Jawans were now not in contact with Aarya. But the horseman was still holding the horse near his mouth in the valley’s side pushing hard towards up and not leaving. More than half of his body was in valley, with his legs continuously moving to climb up and his hands pushing the horse away from the valley towards the mountain path. I was totally cold and freezed seeing the sight. One or two inches here and there, both Aarya and horse are in the dangerous deep valley. All this continued for some seconds. Finally the horse became little patient came out of the valley with all his might and immediately one of Jawans once again caught hold of Aarya and removed somehow from the saddle. The horseman came out of the valley. I was shocked completely frozen, horrified, dismayed, intimidated and paralyzed with fear. My fear and tremors had no limits. After the incident I couldn’t speak for a while . I was completely in a breakdown condition and collapsed mentally. Somehow I just got down from my horse and went towards Aarya to see her. She was fine and smiling as if this was ride of an amusement park. I tightly hugged her with tears starting to roll down my eyes. This was the most emotional moment of my lifeMy emotional feelings were not even half of this moment when she was born.

Just see the width of the path only two feet wide and deep valley besides it.
Aftermaths of the incident
Now I was just going to blast on that horseman telling him that his horse is not meant for walking in this conditions and is not stable. But on the same time I saw Sonali in front and just told me to keep quiet . She had also seen the incident. She becomes more agitated and disturbed when something happens to Aarya , but here she remained calm from outside but definitely not from inside. We were at a  height of around 13500 feet with 1500 feet deep valley on one side . Still 3.5 kms were pending to reach our destination.Understanding this and using presence of mind she didn’t utter a word to him. Otherwise that horseman was gone. The main mistake which he did was to bring that 18 year old horse here which was not fully fit.I think seeing Aarya he must have thought its ok to bring that horse whereas my horseman Yakoob told that there were still two strong horses left in the group.
Now we didn’t speak anything but the Jawaans blasted on that horseman.
They scolded him fierce fully with lot of abusive words  ” क्या बे, किस घोड़े को लेके आया . यह घोडा यात्रा करने के लायक नहीं है. ” ( What is this? Which horse did you bring here? This one is not fit for this journey)
He replied, ” आप लोग सामने से आये और इसकी पूछ पकड़ी इसलिए यह भागा.”( You all came from front and caught his tail, thats the reason he ran.)
Listening to this now Jawaans went berserk and went to hit him saying  ” अबे हमें बोल रहा ,दूं क्या लगा के,________ ,_________ ,_______,खाली पैसे देखो बस बाकी कुछ नहीं. ________, _________,. ( all the words in the spaces are abusive words) ( You are blaming us. Shall I give you a punch.You all just look out for money and nothing else. Now You come i will see you. You meet me in Pahalgam, Now their journey is going on , I will not do anything , will just see later)
Then he told us “यह अगर आप लोग को परेशान करे ना तो  किसी भी BSF या CRPF वाले को बोल देना.और डरो हम है ना आपको कुछ नहीं होगा. हमारा काम ही यही है. मैं आपके साथ आता हूँ गुफा तक फिर पञ्चतरनी तक भी आऊँगा.” ( This guy if perturbs you then tell any of the officers from BSF or CRPF. And don’t get afraid. We are here. Our work is to save you. I will come till the cave along with you and then return to Panchtarni.)
Again started abusing them.
I was not keen on making Aarya to sit on that old horse but the Jawans insisted that nothing would happen since they are coming with us. Now also  that horse Chhotu was walking on the edges. Jawaans pointed out to that horseman and said that they would see to it that  this was his last yatra.
But still my condition was in petrified state. I was not thinking of anything else but that incident , feeling of getting near the cave was also not bothering me which I was planning for past 3 months. I was still crying on my horse badal with full tears rolling. TOTALLY CRUSHED.
LORD  WAS THERE, EVERYWHERE AND HE SAVED MY DAUGHTER , RATHER THAN MINE HIS DAUGHTER, AARYAThats it. I hope you got all the answers of my questions  in my previous postLORD TAKES CARE OF US EVEN WHEN WE ARE NOT LOOKING AT OURSELVES.
Anyways we were in the middle of Mighty journey to Almighty. So obviously we had to proceed.Within few minutes and some 100 meters  we reached a place called Sangam or Sangam Top.
SANGAM TOP ( 13500 feet)
Sangam or Sangam top  is a place where the routes via Pahalgam and Baltal meet. Apart from it in the valley there is confluence of two rivers one coming from Baltal and other one coming from the direction of  Amarnath Cave. Sangam is much more happening place in Baltal route  than Pahalgam. In Sangam again you get lot of langars , camps and people selling masks, oxygen cylinders etc. From here the Amarnath Cave just 3 kms away.

At Sangam top – The path seen in the opposite mountain is from Baltal.
After crossing Sangam for the first time in this yatra I saw a double seat on the horse. I thought why didn’t I do this before. But for this the horse should be extremely strong and  trained. Similarly after this I saw a man with his child afterwards.

Heading towards the cave I saw a lady with a child on horse on Sangam Top
Final 3 kms
Now we were on the last 3.0 kms towards our destination and we were inside the valley where the secret cave was present. From left hand side people from Baltal shouting Har Har Mahdeo and Jay Bhole were seen like small creatures walking on the hill. But still their voice was loud enough to get heard. I lost some of my fear due to the incident and started concentrating on the cave. I was just trying to peep through the valley whether the cave was visible or not. Actually from Sangam itself 3 kms away, the cave is visible , but it was early morning at around 7.30 AM and the rays of the sun were hitting on the  valley and due to the reflection , nothing was visible. But the mystery in my mind was still  there where was the cave ?
Actually in the  picture below , I could see the cave through the distance from here , but due to heavy sunlight plus fog the camera is not able to capture it.

On the way to the Cave

A feel at Mahagunas Top
As I told you in the previous post that, surrounding Mahgunas top there are more than 4 – 5 peaks that adds beauty to this place including the altitude where we stand at 14500 feet. Ultimately It also has one of the best views in the yatra. The temperature in Mahagunas top drops to 6 – 7 degree which my family had never felt . Our body hair stood on end , our ears were blocked and our teeth were chattering .The weather here at Mahagunas Top can change anytime ( suddenly rain or snow fall or heat)  due to its height and snow capped peaks surrounded by it. One thing I wanted to tell you about these peaks is that every peak was at least more than 5500 m and at the top of it, you can see the flag waving. My camera couldn’t capture the flags on the peaks as the distance was too large, but that flags could be easily visible by naked eye. The view of the flags here again creates feeling of patriotism here and reminds us of wars in Kargil and Kashmir.
The best part at Mahagunas Top when I was travelling was there was the snow. I found much snow at only two places when I was travelling at that time and that was in Mahagunas Top and near Amarnath Cave. Rest everywhere the snow was just in patches. Here my horses had to walk lot of stretches on the snow . Walking on snow again is a very tough task as it is very slippery and friction is less. Although falling from horse here may be not that much dangerous, it would certainly hurt to a very great extent.
