Dear Divine Souls,

After visiting Hawa Mahal we went to Jantar Mantar which is nearby at a five minute walking distance from Hawa Mahal. This was also one of the mind blowing places in Jaipur. There are plenty of observatories in the world but Jantar Mantar is considered  to be the best and largest among them. It has a set of around 20 architectural astronomical instruments , built by Maharaja Jai Singh at its then capital , Jaipur between 1727 and 1734. He had constructed five such facilities each at Jaipur  Ujjain , Delhi , Varanasi and Mathura  among which Jaipur is the biggest and best preserved. These observatories come under WORLD HERITAGE LIST.

For understanding the working of these yantras or instruments , One has to use an recorded instrument with head phones on rent. When one walks near the instrument and presses the button of that astronomical instrument, he/she can hear the information regarding that on the head phones. Apart from this there are lot of Tourist Guides available on rent. They are better as they can answer the doubts also and give examples.

Lets go to some of the astronomical instruments and see their uses . The first one after entering the gate comes.

Unnatamsa Yantra

Unnatamsa is used for measuring altitude - the angular height of an object in the sky.

Jantar Mantar , Jaipur
Dakshinottara Bhitti Yantra

Dakshinottara Bhitti measures the altitude or the angular height of celestial bodies when the cross the local meridian

Jantar Mantar , Jaipur
Then we go the world's largest Sundial called Vrihat Samrat Yantra with a height of 90 feet and a base of 147 feet.

Jantar Mantar , Jaipur
This is also largest among all astronomical instruments in other five observatories made by Maharaj Jai Singh .
Jantar Mantar , Jaipur
Vrihat Samrat Yantra

This is a Sun Dial that can give the time to an accuracy of 2 seconds. The shadows of the slanting wall falls on the different quadrants at different time which helps to calculate the time. This instrument is gigantic, absolutely amazing and steals the show.

Jantar Mantar , Jaipur

Rasivalaya Yantra

Rasivalaya Yantra  measures the latitude and longitude of celestial bodies. There are twelve such intruments for eah Zodiac sign , one for each measurement to be done when corresponding sign of Zodiac transits the meridian.

    1. Thanks Jay ,

Yes this has been made by the same creator named Sawai Jai Singh the founder and ruler of Jaipur . The knowledge he had is incomparable to what scientists have today considering the age he was living .

Thanks for going through and commenting

It was all told by local guide. When he explains all seems ok. After that we forget. Only what the instrument does is what I remembered. Rest everything i forgot

  8. I was so amazed and awestruck when I saw the Jantar Mantar at Jaipur, even though I'd been to the Jantar Mantar at Delhi many times before. To think that so many centuries ago, when they had neither the tools nor the technology that we now possess, they managed to construct such precise and accurate scientific instruments, that too on such a large scale. The principles behind the instruments themselves displays a level of genius and understanding of nature that is to be commended and wondered at.

Beautiful pictures and an informative post as usual. Please do a series of travelogues on the Northeast of India if you can. In fact, if you plan on coming this side, give me a shout - you may end up with my husband and I as travel companions as well :)

    Cheers!
